We are interested in knowing the comparative effectiveness and harms of diagnostic procedures for non-metastatic gastric cancer.

2. Why are you struggling with this issue?

This topic was nominated as important to our clinical practice guidelines staff at ASCO because clinicians feel that there is significant uncertainty about the optimal methods for diagnostic imaging of non-metastatic gastric cancer. As a results there is significant practice variation, and some modalities, such as diagnostic laparoscopy, may be underutilized.

3. What do you want to see changed? How will you know that your issue is improving or has been addressed?

An evidence review will provide the basis for guideline recommendations related to diagnostic imaging. We hope this will be helpful for raising awareness regarding best practices for diagnostic imaging and ultimately reduce practice variation. Improvements in diagnostic imaging will have an impact on treatment decision-making and treatment planning. We will publish the results in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, on the ASCO web site and through our social media channels in order to raise awareness of the evidence-based guideline and we hope these strategies will lead to improvements in clinical practice and patient outcomes.

This evidence report will provide the evidentiary base for an American Society of Clinical Oncology practice guideline on this topic. The guideline would include recommendations for diagnosis and treatment of non-metastatic gastric cancer (note: a treatment topic has already been approved through an earlier nomination process).
