Big Data and Mental Health

NOMINATED TOPIC | September 19, 2023

1. What is the decision or change (e.g., clinical topic, practice guideline, system design, delivery of care) you are facing or struggling with where a summary of the evidence would be helpful?

Impact of Big Data on mental health of customers? With increasing numbers of shops going cashless, effectively forcing customers to provide data, or else making it harder for them to get their basic provisions, how destructive is the effect of that on people's mental health? Privacy and dignity are basic human needs for psychological health, if that is stripped away, it does harm. There is no dignity in data. Data is inherently undignifying. How psychologically dangerous is this move?

2. Why are you struggling with this issue?

Impact on mental health; and also overall economic impact, both through increased mental health costs, and also on economic downturn as people keep their money in their pockets in response to having no privacy.
