Antipsychotics can be classified into two categories, based on the timeline of their development, pharmacology, and anticipated adverse effects profiles. The groups are the typical antipsychotics, also called conventional or first generation, and the atypical antipsychotics, also called second generation. The first-generation antipsychotics were the first successful pharmacological treatments for primary psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia.
