Topical Analgesics (2 of 2)

Topical salicylates were no better than placebo in two trials of patients with osteoarthritis. They were also associated with increased risk of local adverse effects.
Strength of evidence: Low

Topical capsaicin was superior to placebo for pain relief in a systematic review of trials and a subsequent randomized trial. However, it was also associated with increased local adverse effects (burning, stinging, and erythema) and withdrawals from studies because of adverse effects.
Strength of evidence: Low

Topical salicylates and topical capsaicin were not compared to NSAIDs.
