The only FDA-approved topical NSAIDs are formulations with diclofenac. Three head-to-head trials found topical diclofenac similar in efficacy to oral NSAIDs in patients with localized osteoarthritis.
Strength of evidence: Moderate

Topical NSAIDs were associated with a lower risk of GI adverse effects but a higher risk of dermatologic adverse effects when compared to oral NSAIDs.
Strength of evidence: Moderate
