Factors Affecting Outcomes: Pre-existing Disease

The risk of GI bleeding was higher in individuals taking NSAIDs who had had previous bleeding than those who had not. Two trials found high rates of recurrent ulcer bleeding in patients randomized to either celecoxib (4.9% to 8.9% with 200 mg twice daily) or a nonselective NSAID and a proton pump inhibitor (PPI; 6.3%).
