Pain Management Interventions for Hip Fracture
Pain Management Interventions Examined in this CER (3)
Eight categories of interventions were identified in the literature search pertaining to pain management for the population of elderly patients with hip fracture.
- Complementary and alternative medicine approaches (CAM), meaning systems and practices that are not part of conventional medicine and include acupressure and relaxation techniques such as the Jacobson method. Acupressure uses applied pressure at body points away from the location of pain to lessen pain. The Jacobson technique uses repetitive, alternating patterns of muscle contraction and relaxation to reduce pain.
- Multimodal pain management, which uses several modalities simultaneously or in a specified order to disrupt multiple pain pathways.
