Pain Management Interventions for Hip Fracture

This slide set is based on a comparative effectiveness review (CER) titled Pain Management Interventions for Hip Fracture, which was developed by the University of Alberta Evidence-based Practice Center for the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) under Contract No. 290-02-0023 and is available online at http://effectivehealthcare.ahrq.gov/hippain.cfm.

CERs are comprehensive systematic reviews of the literature that usually compare two or more types of treatment, such as different drugs or adding a second drug, to usual care for the same disease. The literature included in this review was identified in 1) searches for trials and studies that explicitly evaluated the impact of any pharmacological or nonpharmacological pain management therapy used during treatment of low-impact hip fractures; 2) therapies used during the preoperative, perioperative, or postoperative periods of care; and 3) trials and studies that focused on older adults aged ≥ 50 years. Searches were conducted for studies published from 1990 through 2010.
