CME Information
Course Overview
Prescribing of antipsychotics for children and adolescents has continued to increase, along with concern that their use has expanded beyond indications supported by evidence for effectiveness and safety. Antipsychotics can be divided into two classes, called first- and second-generation (FGAs and SGAs, respectively), based on their timeline of development and adverse effects profiles. The effects of both FGAs and SGAs on patient-centered outcomes such as growth, development, and quality of life are not well understood. The adverse effects associated with both classes of drugs make long-term management difficult and heighten concern about the developmental consequences of pediatric use of antipsychotics, for both approved and off-label indications.
This activity presents the clinical study evidence about the use of first- and second-generation antipsychotics for treatment of psychiatric disorders of children, to support medical decisionmaking that balances potential benefits and adverse effects for each patient.
Educational Objectives
At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:
- Distinguish between first-generation antipsychotics (FGAs) and second-generation antipsychotics (SGAs) and their pediatric uses described in the clinical literature.
- Categorize FGAs and SGAs according to strength of evidence for benefit, or for lack of benefit, in pediatric indications.
- Compare and contrast the adverse effects of FGAs and SGAs in pediatric use.
Target Audience
This CME activity is designed to meet the educational needs of pediatricians, primary care physicians, psychiatrists, and other clinicians involved in treating children and adolescents who have psychiatric and behavioral disorders.
